Level 3 Award in Adapting Exercise for Independently Active Older PeopleAll qualifications

Exercise isn’t only for younger people. Maintaining a healthy attitude to exercise throughout our life helps us to live independently for longer and it is never too late to get started. You may not be aiming to run any more marathons, but regular exercise will help with daily tasks in everyday life such as walking upstairs, putting the shopping away and getting up and down with ease.

I am sure all my clients would agree with me that age is just a number. Not every 70 year old is the same just like not every 30 year old is the same. I work with my clients to make improvements to their overall fitness level regardless of their starting point. For those with more mobility restrictions we will focus on chair based exercises to begin with, however, for those who are already more physically active we can by-pass this stage and work at an increased difficulty. Every session will be individually tailored and adaptations can be made to all exercises to decrease impact or difficulty to suit the individual.

As we get older the benefits of exercise include:

  • Reducing the risk of high blood pressure
  • Reducing risk of falls
  • Improving balance and co-ordination
  • Decreasing immobility
  • Maintaining and increasing muscular strength and flexibility
  • Maintaining independence and wellbeing
  • Improved posture

One of my favourite and most inspiring clients is 79 years young and never misses his weekly session. Nobody has been a better example to me of the importance of staying active, staying mobile and continually believing in progress.
